Arizona State RB Rachaad White heads to Bucs in draft

Apr 29, 2022, 8:08 PM

Arizona State Sun Devils running back Rachaad White went in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

At 6-foot and 214 pounds, White came off the board at 91st overall and was the fourth running back taken.

In his second season at ASU, the senior rushed for 1,006 yards and 15 touchdowns, averaging 5.5 yards per carry. He added 456 yards on 43 receptions with another score in the passing game.

Sun Devils head coach Herm Edwards compared White’s physical player profile to Hall of Famer Marcus Allen.

White performed well at the NFL Draft Combine with a 38-inch vertical and a 4.48-second time in the 40-yard dash. That only bolstered his growing stock after he performed this past season and then got in front of scouts first at the Senior Bowl.

White said in March he met with the Buccaneers, Arizona Cardinals, Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers during the NFL Combine, adding all the teams he spoke with have had “good vibes.”

“I pride myself on being a playmaker … I feel like I would make a good playmaker for an NFL team,” White told reporters at the combine. “A guy that can be on special teams, can catch the ball out of the backfield, pick up pass protection, run the ball, whatever you need I can bring to an NFL team.”

Here’s what NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein wrote of White as a prospect.

Running back with size and senior year production, but the tape is more average than exciting. White is a tight-hipped runner lacking desired lateral agility and burst after changing direction. He has a tendency to be slowed or stopped by first-level tacklers but is a more natural runner once he gets up to the second level. He fails to show enough creativity to escape the “gets what is blocked” tag, but he does run with adequate vision.

White is the first ASU prospect off the board in this draft.
