D-backs’ Madison Bumgarner reaches MLB milestone with 2,000 strikeouts

Add another accolade to the illustrious career of Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner.

The left-hander on Wednesday struck out the 2,000th batter of his career, making him the 86th pitcher in Major League Baseball history to accomplish the feat.

Bumgarner came into the ballgame against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park with 1,996 Ks to his name.

However, when it comes to all-time statistics, MLB does not recognize numbers that take place in the postseason.

That means that Bumgarner’s 87 Ks in the playoffs — including 45 over 52.2 innings in his 2014 run to a World Series title with the San Francisco Giants — are not included in his career total.

The 32-year-old southpaw amassed a total of 1,794 in his 11 years as a member of the Giants prior to signing a five-year, $85 million deal with the D-backs going into the 2020 season.

In Bumgarner’s three years in the Valley thus far, he has accumulated 206 strikeouts in 50 starts across more than 73 innings pitched.

In 14 starts prior to Wednesday’s game, the LHP has garnered a 3-6 record to go along with a 3.45 ERA and 48 strikeouts.

Bumgarner also came into the ballgame with a 1.322 WHIP and 6.1 strikeouts per nine innings ratio.

The D-backs fell to the Padres, 10-4.
