D-backs’ David Peralta blasts grand slam, climbs franchise HR list

Jul 3, 2022, 2:08 PM | Updated: 3:26 pm

The first pitch Arizona Diamondbacks left fielder David Peralta saw with the bases loaded in the fifth inning against the Colorado Rockies Sunday was a slider that caught too much of the plate.

The ball thrown by Rockies starter Chad Kuhl was directly in Peralta’s wheelhouse, and the veteran shot it deep into the stands of right field. It carried 452 feet into the second deck with an exit velocity of 107.6 MPH.

The grand slam was the third of Peralta’s career and gave Arizona a 5-0 lead in the rubber match against Colorado.

It also moved Peralta into sole possession of No. 6 on the D-backs’ all-time home runs list with 109. He moved ahead of outfielder Justin Upton’s 108.

Peralta made his D-backs debut in 2014 and has played the fourth-most games in team history at 942. Only Luis Gonzalez and Paul Goldschmidt have more.

The lefty is 12 away from Mark Reynolds, who is No. 5 on the list.

Peralta has 11 long balls this season.

The bases were loaded after consecutive singles by catcher Jose Herrera and third baseman Josh Rojas followed by a walk from outfielder Alek Thomas.

The D-backs fell 6-5 at Coors Field Sunday after Rockies first baseman C.J. Cron hit a pair of three-run home runs in the later innings.

Arizona is back in action Monday at 3:10 p.m. against the visiting San Francisco Giants.
