Jordan Lawlar headlines Diamondbacks participating in Arizona Fall League

Sep 18, 2022, 6:45 AM

Several Arizona Diamondbacks prospects are slated to play in the Arizona Fall League that ramps up starting Oct. 3.

Among them is shortstop and 2021 No. 6 overall pick Jordan Lawlar. The 20-year-old has flown through the minors thus far and is already 18 games in Double-A Amarillo after 82 professional games prior.

Across 100 career appearances in pro ball, Lawlar is slashing .309/.406/.518 with 16 home runs, 19 doubles and 40 stolen bases.

However, he is just one of the seven D-backs on the preliminary roster:

OF/C Cooper Hummel

Hummel exceeded rookie limits with 182 plate appearances and counting in 2022. In his brief MLB experience, the outfielder/catcher slashed .176/.280/.296 with two home runs and 14 RBIs.

However, he hit .310 with 15 extra-base hits in 33 games with Triple-A Reno.

The D-backs acquired Hummel from the Milwaukee Brewers at the 2021 trade deadline for infielder Eduardo Escobar. Hummel is hitting .334 with 12 homers, 21 doubles and 56 RBIs in 79 games for Triple-A Reno.

RHP J.B. Bukauskas

Like Hummel, Bukauskas has MLB experience as well. In 17.1 innings last season, he had a 7.79 ERA. He also had an issue with giving up home runs.

However, the right-hander missed most of 2022 battling a Grade 2 shoulder strain but has a 2.55 ERA in 17.2 innings between the Florida Complex League and Triple-A Reno.

3B Deyvison de los Santos

The 19-year-old third baseman already has eight games under his belt in Double-A Amarillo.

Overall, the slugger is slashing .306/.347/.502 with 22 homers, 29 doubles and 104 RBIs in 124 games.

The No. 6 overall prospect in the organization has a big league ETA of 2024 and a raw power tool with a 60/70 grade out of 80. The 60 marks how far he hits the ball now, while the 70 is his peak.

RHP Jackson Goddard

The D-backs selected Goddard in the third round of the 2018 MLB Draft.

After a promising 2019 campaign as a starter, the 2020 minor league year was lost to COVID-19 — as was the case for all prospects.

Goddard also missed the entire 2021 season and some of 2022 to injuries.

In 23 innings this season, he had a 3.91 ERA. However, Goddard at times had problems throwing strikes, with a 14.4% walk rate.

LHP Kyle Backhus

The undrafted southpaw signed with the Diamondbacks organization in 2021 and popped this season with a knack for striking guys out.

Across High-A and Double-A, Backhus struck out 34.5% of batters faced and posted a 3.27 ERA with six saves in 52.1 innings.

His Double-A Amarillo ERA of 4.05 is due to two outings in which he allowed all six of his earned runs across 1.1 innings. The other 12 innings he pitched in Double-A yielded no runs and 16 strikeouts.

RHP Chad Patrick

Patrick was a fourth-round pick for Arizona in 2021 and had a solid 2022 campaign.

In 13 outings (10 starts), the right-hander posted a 3.30 ERA and a 28% strikeout rate.
