Cardinals to sign RBs Corey Clement, Ty’Son Williams to practice squad

Oct 11, 2022, 5:38 PM | Updated: 5:53 pm

It would appear the Arizona Cardinals are preparing to be without at least one of their rostered running backs after losing three of their four available players to injury against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

Arizona Sports John Gambadoro expects Cardinals RB Jonathan Ward to end up on the injured reserve due to a hamstring injury.

Additionally, Gambadoro reports Arizona has agreed to sign free agent backs Corey Clement and Ty’Son Williams to the practice squad.

The Cardinals on Tuesday worked out a group of running backs, including the 27-year-old Clement, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Arizona also worked out the 26-year-old Williams and veteran wide receiver Laquon Treadwell, according to Wilson.

The Cardinals officially cleared a spot each from the 53-man roster and another on the practice squad on Tuesday, releasing receiver Andre Baccellia and practice squad offensive lineman Danny Isidora.

Clement had his best season as a rookie on the Eagles’ Super Bowl-winning team in 2017, rushing 74 times for 321 yards (4.3  yards per carry) and four touchdowns. He added 10 receptions for 123 yards and two scores on the ground as a rookie.

He stuck with Philadelphia for the next three seasons before playing 17 games for the Dallas Cowboys last season and latching on for a brief time with the Baltimore Ravens during this past offseason.

Clement has 196 career rushes and a 4.1 yards-per-carry average.

Williams has 13 games (three starts) of NFL experience after going undrafted out of BYU in 2020. He spent time on the Ravens practice squad that same year before making his debut in 2021.

Last season, the 6-foot, 220-pound running back garnered 185 yards and one touchdown on 35 carries (5.3 per attempt). He added 84 receiving yards on nine receptions.

Williams spent 2022 training camp with the Indianapolis Colts before being released.

The Cardinals lost starter James Conner (ribs) and backups Darrel Williams (knee) and Jonathan Ward (hamstring) Sunday in a 20-17 loss.

That left third-year pro Eno Benjamin as the only running back left who was active.

Arizona also has rookie sixth-round pick Keaontay Ingram on the roster, but he was not active Sunday. The team does not have any more backs on the practice squad.
