Phoenix Suns backup guard Landry Shamet will not suit up in the season opener Wednesday against the Dallas Mavericks, head coach Monty Williams told reporters.

Shamet was ruled out a day before the game with a hip strain that put his status in question dating back to the preseason.

The 25-year-old contributed 8.3 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists last season.

He shot a career-worst 39% overall and 37% from three-point range in his first season with Phoenix and could vie for a larger role after Williams turned to him as a backup point guard for portions of the team’s playoff run than ended in the conference semifinals.

Shamet joined Cam Payne and Cam Johnson as other injury question marks heading into Phoenix’s 2022-23 opener.

Payne and Johnson injured themselves in the second of four preseason games but have worked back into practice action as they missed the last two exhibition games. They rejoined practice on Saturday.

The Suns open the season Wednesday with a 7 p.m. tipoff at Footprint Center.

Their game will air on Arizona Sports 98.7 and with a national television broadcast on ESPN.
