Rams QB Matthew Stafford in concussion protocols ahead of Cardinals game

Nov 9, 2022, 1:42 PM | Updated: 2:03 pm

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford was placed in concussion protocols on Wednesday, head coach Sean McVay told reporters, including The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue.

That will put his status for facing the Arizona Cardinals in Los Angeles this Sunday in question.

McVay added the Rams’ medical staff decided to place Stafford into the protocols after the team’s game Sunday to protect the quarterback.

Backups John Wolford and Bryce Perkins are next up on the depth chart.

Stafford has completed 68% of his passes but has thrown eight touchdowns to eight interceptions for a struggling offense. It’s a far cry from last season, when he threw 41 touchdowns to 17 picks.

Stafford’s yards per attempt average has plummeted from 8.1 last season to 6.8 this year.

Part of the causes stems from offensive line turnover and poor play. The Rams have given up 28 sacks in 2022, two off the total from a year ago leading into their Super Bowl run.

Wolford has yet to appear this season. His only significant NFL experience came two years ago, when in the final week of the regular season he made his only career start, leading the Rams to an 18-7 victory to knock Arizona out of postseason contention.

Wolford went 22-of-38 for 231 yards, no touchdowns and a pick in that game. He added six rushes for 56 more yards.

Perkins would presumably slide into a backup role.

He notably went to Chandler High School and then Arizona State before transferring to see his college career take off at Virginia. Perkins has yet to play in the NFL.
