Report: D-backs bring back Shelby Miller on minor league deal

The Arizona Diamondbacks are bringing back pitcher Shelby Miller on a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training, per MLB insider Robert Murray.

The signing marks another bullpen addition for the D-backs after Arizona reportedly signed right-handed reliever Kendall Graveman to major league contract on Friday.

Miller returns to Arizona after spending three seasons with the team from 2016-18.

Miller was acquired by Arizona in Dec. 2015 in an infamous deal that sent shortstop Dansby Swanson, outfielder Ender Inciarte and pitcher Aaron Blair to the Atlanta Braves for Miller and pitcher Gabe Speier. Miller was coming off a 2015 season where he posted a 6-17 record with a 3.02 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP and made his first and only All-Star appearance.

Miller struggled in 2016, posting a 3-12 record with a 6.15 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP. Miller made just four starts in 2017 and his season was cut short due to season-ending Tommy John surgery.

He returned in June 2018 and pitched in five games, going winless in four starts and posting a 10.69 ERA with a 2.00 WHIP. Miller was non-tendered by the D-backs after the season and became a free agent.

Since then, Miller has mainly been in and out of the majors pitching out of the bullpen for the Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers and Detroit Tigers.

Miller saw bullpen success with the Dodgers in 2023 where he posted a 1.71 ERA with 42 strikeouts in 36 appearances.

The RHP most recently played with the Tigers in 2024 where he posted a 6-8 record with 49 strikeouts and a 0.97 WHIP in 51 appearances. Miller was designated for assignment on Sept. 24 and was later released.
