Sam Leavitt will miss Arizona State’s visit to Iowa State, Jordyn Tyson questionable

Quarterback Sam Leavitt is expected to miss the Arizona State Sun Devils’ visit to Iowa State on Saturday after he exited the Houston loss twice with undisclosed injuries, CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz and SunDevilSource.com’s Chris Karpman first reported.

The team confirmed Leavitt will sit, making Jeff Sims the starter.

Additionally, star wide receiver Jordyn Tyson is questionable and will be evaluated later this week, head coach Kenny Dillingham said.

“It’s definitely something that’s been lingering all year,” Dillingham said Tuesday of if Leavitt’s injury could end up being long-term. “It’s definitely something that could definitely turn into that for sure, just because it hasn’t progressed like we hoped.

“He’s been dealing with this for pretty much the whole year. He hasn’t been at full speed, so we’ll definitely reassess it during the bye and make a decision from there.”

Leavitt first came out after a hard fall on the initial drive, spending a period of time in the medical tent and locker room before reentering for ASU’s second drive.

He then was seen limping off the field to end a possession early in the fourth quarter and walked off gingerly when the game ended.

Sims finished the game and led a scoring drive to pull within one possession before ASU went four-and-out on the potentially game-tying two-minute drill.

Leavitt missed the game at Utah on Oct. 11 due to a foot injury and returned the next week against Texas Tech. His right foot was back in a boot while being held out of practice on Tuesday.

Without Tyson in the Houston game, Malik McClain put forth a career game with seven catches and 159 yards. However, none of his catches were from Sims.

Tight end Chamon Metayer was Sims’ favorite target, catching two passes for 35 yards and Sims’ first touchdown as a Sun Devil.

Leavitt has thrown for 1,628 yards with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions this season. He’s rushed 73 times for 306 yards and five more touchdowns.

Sims has completed 24 of 49 passes (49%) for 182 yards and a touchdown without an interception. He has 29 carries for 102 yards as well.

ASU-Iowa State will kick off at 10 a.m. MST on Saturday and can be seen on TNT.
