The Arizona Diamondbacks have claimed right-handed pitcher Grant Holman from the Athletics, the team announced Sunday.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the D-backs placed lefty reliever A.J. Puk on the 60-day injured list as he continues to rehab from ulnar collateral ligament surgery.

Drafted out of the sixth round of the 2021 MLB Draft, the 25-year-old has appeared in 40 games the past two seasons with the Athletics. He has posted a 4.66 ERA in 38.2 innings pitched with 33 strikeouts and a 1.58 WHIP.

Holman appeared in 22 games last season, posting a 5.09 ERA across 23 innings pitched with 17 strikeouts and a 1.52 WHIP. He was placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder rotator cuff tendinitis in June and was later transferred to the 60-day injured list. The Athletics designated him for assignment on Tuesday.

The D-backs’ acquisition of Holman comes as Arizona continues to add potential bullpen help or minor league depth. Earlier this week, the D-backs brought back veteran reliever Paul Sewald on a one-year deal and signed pitcher Joe Ross to a minor league deal.

In addition to the bullpen, the D-backs brought back starter Zac Gallen on a one-year deal.

The old throwing (bleep) at the wall to have healthy bodies approach to management . . . Fingers crossed, but no holding of breath.

Posting a 5.09 ERA across 23 innings pitched with 17 strikeouts and a 1.52 WHIP, he'll fit right in with the other castoffs, pretenders and rejects.

I trust Mike Hazen but we are scrapping the bottom of the barrel for bullpen pitchers.
