PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks placed first baseman Pavin Smith on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to March 29) and recalled infield prospect Jose Fernandez before their home opener on Monday.

The D-backs announced that Smith is dealing with left elbow inflammation.

Smith dealt with a left elbow issue in spring training which took him off the field for a few days. He returned at the end of Cactus League but was scratched from the Opening Day lineup on Thursday. Smith played on Friday and Saturday as the designated hitter.

Fernandez is set to make his MLB debut shortly after making his Triple-A debut over the weekend.

The 22-year-old infielder was a spring standout with three home runs, three doubles and a triple in 10 Cactus League games, along with a three-hit performance in the Spring Breakout prospect showcase.

He hit 17 home runs with 12 stolen bases and a .775 OPS last year in Double-A Amarillo. Defensively, he’s played all four infield spots throughout his career.

Fernandez was added to the 40-man roster this offseason to protect from the Rule 5 Draft.

The Diamondbacks take on the Detroit Tigers on Monday night at 7:10 p.m. MST at Chase Field. Catch all the action on the Arizona Sports app, 98.7 or arizonasports.com.
