ASU OL Wade Helton, CB Ashton Stamps leave game vs. Texas A&M with apparent injuries

Arizona State interior offensive lineman Wade Helton and cornerback Ashton Stamps left Saturday’s game at Texas A&M with apparent injuries. Stamps was able to return for the second half.

Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed appeared to limp off his own issue at the end of the half following a hit as he went out of bounds on a scramble. He still was able to run to the locker room at the half, and he was out there to start the second half and his first pass was picked off.

Helton, who took the most center snaps among Sun Devils last season (422 to Ben Coleman’s 368 and Makua Pule’s 178), had replaced starting center Tana Alo-Tupuola for the Sun Devils’ final drive of the first quarter after the center had an injury scare.

All 34 of Helton’s snaps in Week 1 came at right guard, which is where he started Saturday. Rob Lapuaho filled in at right guard when Helton shifted over to center, and he replaced Helton when he exited.

Pule had 130 snaps at guard last season, and he may see snaps in the rotation given the injury.

The Sun Devils scored an equalizing touchdown late in the first quarter behind Helton at center, wrapping up what had been a sloppy start for the team that included three penalties in critical moments.

Helton was back at right guard the following drive before his injury as Alo-Tupuola returned.

Stamps suffered his injury as he blew up a play behind the line of scrimmage for a tackle for loss. He writhed on the ground before getting up and running to the medical tent.

He is ASU’s top corner opposite Rodney Bimage Jr. If Stamps has to miss time, standout freshman DaQuwan Dunn is likely the corner who will pick up the slack.
