Nolan Arenado leaves D-backs game due to thumb injury

Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Nolan Arenado left Tuesday’s game against the Miami Marlins due to right thumb inflammation.

Arenado took three at-bats in the game, hitting a single, but lined out to right field in the bottom of the fifth inning. After the at-bat, Arenado was seen flexing the thumb and grimacing.

He went on to play all of the sixth before Jose Fernandez replaced him in the top of the seventh.

D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said after the game that Arenado will be in the lineup for Wednesday’s series finale.

“Arenado’s OK,” he said. “He got a base hit the at-bat before the line out, and he had just kind of stung his hand a little bit, his right thumb. So we thought just get him off the field, get some treatment, get him back in the lineup tomorrow, which he is in the lineup.”

Arenado was scratched from the lineup on Aug. 27 due to the same injury, with Fernandez taking his place once more after Arenado was originally supposed to be in the lineup in San Francisco. The next day, Arenado was back in the lineup.

Fernandez committed an error in his place on a short-hop grounder in the top of the ninth inning with two outs. Miami did not score as a result.

Arenado has been one of the few consistent presences at the plate this year for Arizona, entering Tuesday with a team-high 25 HRs and tied for the RBI lead at 73.
