Gardner Minshew among several reported options for Giants in wake of Jaxson Dart’s injury

The New York Giants will start Jameis Winston at quarterback Sunday in their first game since Jaxson Dart tore his ACL, and Arizona Cardinals backup Gardner Minshew II could be in their sights if it doesn’t go well.

Minshew was among several external options for New York reported by ESPN’s Ian Rapoport, Adam Schefter and Mike Garafolo. The others?

• San Francisco 49ers backup Mac Jones
• Kansas City Chiefs backup Justin Fields
• Free agent Brandon Allen, who was with New York before 53-man roster cuts

The last time Minshew saw extended run was the 2024 season, when he started nine of the Las Vegas Raiders’ first 11 games and appeared in a 10th. He threw for 2,013 yards with nine touchdowns and 10 interceptions while completing 66.3% of his passes.

He then threw just 13 times, completing six passes, across four games and one start with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2025.

The year with the Raiders was the third time he had played at least 10 games in a season. He started 12 games (14 total appearances) for the Jacksonville Jaguars as a rookie in 2019 and started 13 games (17 appearances) for the Indianapolis Colts in 2023.

Minshew is yet to see any regular-season action in his first year with the Cardinals, and he was 40 of 48 with 404 passing yards, three touchdowns and one interception in three preseason games.

The veteran has continued to split backup reps in practice with rookie Carson Beck. If Arizona was to trade Minshew, it would reinforce the idea that the club plans to see what it has in Beck this season.

Minshew is on a one-year deal with a base salary of $2.9 million and a cap hit of $5.7 million, per Spotrac.
