‘It was a disaster’: Sean Miller reflects on his viral sweaty shirt moment from 2016

Arizona's brief March Madness appearance in 2016 was one to forget for Sean Miller for many reasons.

Ten years after a disappointing loss and a sweaty day made him into a memorable meme, Texas basketball head coach Sean Miller is still thankful that coaches no longer need to wear suits during games.

When Miller was the coach for Arizona, he infamously sweated through his dress shirt during its first round 2016 March Madness matchup against Wichita State.

“If there was one good thing COVID brought the world, it was that college basketball coaches have a choice on how they dress, and nobody has benefitted from that more than me,” Miller said to CBS Sports senior writer Matt Norlander.

Up until that game, Miller often coached with a jacket over his shirt, but he said he was as fit as he’s ever been and decided to take it off.

Since Miller sweats a lot normally, someone approached him and offered a dress shirt made of a much lighter and more breathable material.

“What he ended up doing was setting me up because there wasn’t as much material on that shirt,” Miller said. “It was a disaster.”

At halftime of the game, with Arizona down to Wichita State 31-19 as a heavy favorite, Miller bumped into his wife, who commented on his shirt right away.

“You’re a disaster, put your coat on,” Miller’s wife told him. “You’re embarrassing yourself and our family, I am mortified.”

Miller ended up changing his shirt at halftime after the playful run-in with his wife.

Despite being soaked in sweat, Miller didn’t even think about putting an undershirt on either.

When Norlander asked him why that is, he responded in classic Miller fashion:

“I’m not a big undershirt guy,” Miller said. “I sweat so much that if I put an undershirt on, I would just be drenched.”

Arizona ended up losing to Wichita State, crushing its March Madness hopes in the first round.

“Not only did we get killed by Wichita State, but that’s the infamous bad day, no doubt,” Miller said.
