The Phoenix Suns, Phoenix Mercury and Valley of the Sun YMCA are building a $60 million state-of-the-art YMCA in downtown Phoenix aimed at expanding access to programs and resources for central and south Phoenix families, the groups announced Monday.
The project is scheduled to open in 2029 and will serve as a community project for this season’s NBA All-Star Game in Phoenix. A groundbreaking ceremony is planned during All-Star Weekend.
The multi-story development continues Suns and Mercury majority owner Mat Ishbia’s ongoing efforts to invest in the local community since taking over the franchises in 2023.
“Our impact as an organization extends far beyond basketball,” Ishbia said in a release. “It’s about making a difference in the lives of the people who make Phoenix such a special place. This is more than a building — it’s an investment in our community and its future.
“It’s a place where kids can discover their potential, families can build meaningful connections and everyone can come together, support one another and grow.”
The three-story, 55,000-square-foot facility will serve as a hub for Arizona youth basketball, featuring three courts: one NBA-sized court and two high school-sized courts. The space will host camps, clinics, tournaments and other youth development programming.
Beyond athletics, the center will offer educational, health and community resources, including tutoring, internships, onsite counselors and coaches, career development programs, nutrition classes and a full-service cafe.
“This partnership marks an exciting new chapter for the YMCA and our commitment to downtown Phoenix,” Valley of the Sun YMCA President and CEO Bryan Madden said. “Building on nearly 134 years of service, we are reimagining the downtown YMCA to create a place where youth and families can connect, grow and thrive for generations to come.”
VanTrust Real Estate will also develop an additional three stories above the athletic and community center to add approximately 60 units of affordable housing.
The Phoenix Suns/Phoenix Mercury Foundation, founded in 1988, contributes more than $5 million annually to local communities and has granted more than $50 million to nonprofit partners since its inception.
