Character Counts: Pirates’ Andrew McCutchen receives HR ball from fan

Nov 3, 2015, 8:18 PM

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen is known as one of MLB’s good guys.

Earlier this week, McCutchen received the Roberto Clemente Award for his outstanding 2015 season as well as his community work off the field.

One young Pirates fan, who McCutchen visited in the hospital earlier this year, not only benefitted from the baseball star visiting him. He returned the favor.

Matt Graeber, who is recovering from a brain abscess but back on the baseball field, sent McCutchen a thank you letter with an autographed baseball. Graeber’s signature was on the ball, one he hit for a home run in his own game.

McCutchen posted a picture of both ball and letter on Facebook with the following message:

“Matt — thank you for the HR ball… and the autograph! More importantly, I’m so glad you’re doing better and healing. also thanks to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC for the work they do for these kids. This was an amazing letter to receive today. You’re the true hero Matt!”

Here’s the picture of Graeber’s touching gifts to to McCutchen.
