Character Counts: 1 percent of Zack Greinke’s salary will go to charity

The Arizona Diamondbacks shelled out to sign free agent pitcher Zack Greinke, but both sides had others in mind during the contract negotiations.

Greinke, who inked a six-year, $206 million deal with the D-backs, will give 1 percent of his yearly salary to charities supported by the team, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman.

The new Diamondbacks pitcher will receive a yearly salary breakdown like so.

Do the math after the $18 million signing bonus, and that’s $188.5 million in total yearly salary, which brings his total of charitable donations to around $2 million by the end of his contract.

That’s a lot of giving.
