Carson Beck’s debut reignited intrigue surrounding Arizona Cardinals

Carson Beck did his employers a big favor. In the only primetime game on Arizona’s schedule, Beck turned in a performance that made the Cardinals look fresh and competent, a performance that reflected well on the entire organization entering Hail Larry weekend at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Beck also did Valley sports fans a big favor. He’s made the Cardinals interesting again in the dead of summer.

Following an offseason where our NFL franchise has been mocked and ridiculed, Beck just dropped the kind of game that clears out the lazy hazy fog of perception. A game that hints of a newborn horizon.

He was that good in his preseason debut against the Panthers.

Beck completed 15 of his 19 passes, which included two drops and a pass he purposely threw into the dirt, pulling the plug on an ill-fated play before things got markedly worse. Which is to say he was nearly perfect.

His arm talent was a revelation, a mixture of zipline passes, rainbow passes, a nifty sidearm completion and an exquisite low throw near a crowded goal line that protected the football and the well-being of his receiver.

Many critics were convinced Beck was nothing more than a low-ceiling game manager with the benefit of great experience, a quarterback who played 55 games over six seasons in college football, one who often struggled in the face of pressure. Many remember the interception he threw to seal the College Football Playoff title game, when an Indiana defender intercepted his badly underthrown attempt.

That wasn’t the quarterback we all witnessed on Thursday. To the contrary, Beck looked poised, cerebral, unfazed by the moment, fully healed after tearing an elbow ligament in his throwing arm in 2024. Could we really be so lucky?

Caveats must be stated. It’s preseason football, and the Panthers were playing second- and third-string players inside a vanilla defense. But everything Beck did was on time and on task. After a poor start to training camp when he threw too many wild pitches and errant passes, his accuracy was not only exemplary against the Panthers. It was pinpoint.

Beck was in rhythm from the beginning, a tribute to his preparation and to new head coach Mike LaFleur, who serves as the team’s play caller. Beck also had no trouble turning his back on the defense to operate play-action schemes, and his prevailing sense of calm is a great trait for a rookie quarterback to possess.

Already, there is great hunger to see him play again. If Beck continues to stack strong performances in the coming weeks, I will begin crafting my Mea culpa. I’ve whiffed on a handful of quarterbacks in my time, a list that includes Kyler Murray, Max Hall and Johnny Manziel. I thought all had the chance to be special. I felt the opposite about Beck, and hopefully, he will be my biggest swing and miss in 28 years.

Beck might even provide a different kind of pressure for Jacoby Brissett, the backup who pushed Kyler Murray off the stage and out of the picture in 2025. Every failing football city loves and yearns for the backup quarterback, and if Beck becomes a homegrown fan favorite in the next few weeks, they will be chanting his name after every loss.

There is no quarterback competition at this point. But at this rate, it’s happening sooner rather than later.
