Diamondbacks score 8 runs in record-setting 2-out rally vs. Rockies

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks rallied for a single-game, franchise-record nine consecutive hits during the fifth inning of Sunday’s 13-6 win against the Colorado Rockies, all of which came with two outs.

Arizona (57-61) scored eight runs after two unceremonious outs began the frame, and it fittingly began with Lourdes Gurriel Jr.

Gurriel, who hit the walk-off double on Saturday and threw out a runner at the plate in the top of the fifth inning on Sunday, lined a single off Rockies starter Tanner Gordon.

Two hits later, the Rockies had their opportunity to avoid the entire ordeal with the bases loaded.

Alek Thomas hit a grounder to the right side, stopped by sliding first baseman Warming Bernabel. What would have been a close play at first became moot, as Bernabel’s throw to Gordon was wide. The official ruling was a single with no error attached.

The previous record was seven, done four times.

James McCann, Blaze Alexander and Corbin Carroll followed Thomas with RBI singles.

Ketel Marte and Geraldo Perdomo, who started the inning with pop-outs, looked at each other and knew they couldn’t be the ones to miss out.

Marte roped the only extra-base hit of the frame into the left-field corner. Carroll zoomed around the bases to slide in safely ahead of the throw.

“Marte brought it up to me about how we were the two quicks out, and I told him, ‘Bro, I won’t be the last out.’ So after he hit a double, I said I wouldn’t be the last out. And thank God it didn’t happen,” Perdomo said.

Perdomo singled home Marte, and the rally ended with Gurriel grounding out. All nine starters in the lineup recorded hits in a row, and the D-backs led 12-3 with all 12 runs scoring with two outs.

“They were unpredictable,” manager Torey Lovullo said of the offense. “We had hits in all directions. We were toggling with our approach, and it was the two-out RBIs.

“They showed a little bit of vulnerability there. They didn’t make a play to close out an inning at first base. We took advantage of that, and that’s what good teams are able to do.”

Lovullo felt Gurriel’s throw was a momentum-swinging play, and the offense built on that moment.

Gordon was tagged with 10 earned runs on Sunday, while reliever Ryan Rolison picked up the final two earned runs of the fifth inning.

The Diamondbacks’ record for runs in an inning remains 14 from Opening Day 2024, also against the Rockies.

Arizona tallied 17 hits in the victory, its most since June 20 (21 against Colorado). The Rockies were not too far behind with 16.

Adrian Del Castillo had a big day with three hits, including a three-run home run in the first inning. He and Marte were tied for the team lead in RBIs with three each.

Brandon Pfaadt started for the Diamondbacks and delivered five innings with three earned runs, which was particularly notable since he allowed 11 hits. He was the second pitcher during this MLB season to give up at least 11 hits with three earned runs or fewer.

With the win, the Diamondbacks swept Colorado (30-87) for the first time this year and improved to 6-3 since the trade deadline.

They moved to six games back of a postseason spot.

Up next for Diamondbacks

The Diamondbacks open a seven-game road trip on Monday at the Texas Rangers (60-59).

The three-game set begins at 5:05 p.m. MST with Ryne Nelson on the mound against Rangers right-hander Nathan Eovaldi, who has a 1.38 ERA in 19 starts this season.

“We’re going to Texas, we know they have a really good team,” Perdomo said. “I expect the same thing from my teammates, just having fun there.”
