Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas will play for Mexico in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

Thomas was born in Tucson, but his mother is of Mexican heritage.

He represented the United States at the 2017 Under-18 Baseball World Cup but made the transition to play for Mexico at the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

In 2023, Thomas slashed .200/.273/.200 in six games for Mexico. He struck out five times and drew one walk in 20 at-bats.

In 2026, Mexico was grouped in Pool B with Brazil, Great Britain, Italy, Mexico and the United States. Its group stage games will be at Daikin Park in Houston.

The World Baseball Classic runs from March 6-17 with the championship game in Miami. Unlike in previous years, no tournament games will be held in Arizona; however, some nations will play tune-up exhibition games around the Valley before the tournament starts.

Mexico will take on the Diamondbacks at Salt River Fields on March 3 and the Los Angeles Dodgers at Camelback Ranch on March 4.

Fellow Diamondbacks Ketel Marte and Geraldo Perdomo will play for the Dominican Republic, while Corbin Carroll will play for Team USA. Eduardo Rodriguez will pitch for the Venezuelan national team, and newly acquired Diamondbacks third baseman Nolan Arenado will represent Puerto Rico after previously playing for the United States.
