The Arizona Diamondbacks have interest in three-time All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman, according to multiple reports.
According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Diamondbacks are “kicking the tires” on the possibility, and trading Ketel Marte could put the Diamondbacks in a position to make a deal with the 2024 Gold Glove third baseman.
MLB Network’s Jon Heyman later reported the Diamondbacks have interest in Bregman and mentioned the Marte trade talks as a factor.
Bregman played in just 114 games last season with the Boston Red Sox due to injuries. Bregman hit 18 home runs and batted .273 with an .821 OPS and .360 on-base percentage.
The third baseman will be entering his age 32 season. The two-time World Series champion has played in at least 155 games five times in his 10-season career.
Bregman became a free agent last season as well and signed a three-year, $120 million contract with the Red Sox with opt-out options after the 2025 and 2026 seasons, deciding to opt out after the 2025 season.
Will the Diamondbacks trade Marte to make room for Bregman?
The Diamondbacks have been listening to calls on Marte, who reportedly has a limited no-trade clause already, and The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal on Monday revealed the five teams on it: New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates and the Athletics.
Marte will have 10-and-5 rights in April (10 years in MLB, five on the same team), which would give him a full no-trade clause.
Bregman currently lives in Arizona during the offseason and is a Scott Boras client. Boras notably represents Diamondbacks pitcher Corbin Burnes, who signed with the team unexpectedly last winter.

Why does everyone seem to care how much they pay him? Get the best players you can, no matter the cost. They’re going
to end up with some $10 an hour reliever no matter what. That’s just how Hazen always seem to work when it comes to the bullpen. It’s not the fans $$, it’s Kendrick’s.
And I don’t care if Marte is cheaper or not I think they should just move on from him because he doesn’t want to play everyday. And from what I’ve been reading, he’s difficult to manage in the clubhouse. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but just move on from him. He’s not brought you any glory
I think the DBs will bring up Waldschmidt at some point next year. That is if he continues to project like the last year and a half. Kid can rake.

Looking at his numbers, he's already past his prime. Unless he agreed to $10 million a year, not a chance I'm paying this guy big money.
