Diamondbacks chase Reds All-Star Andrew Abbott in blowout win to clinch series

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks walloped Cincinnati Reds All-Star starting pitcher Andrew Abbott from the first inning-on during Saturday’s 10-1 victory at Chase Field.

Abbott only completed four innings with a career-high seven runs allowed, six of which were earned. The top six hitters in Arizona’s lineup started the game 8-for-15 off the southpaw, who entered Saturday with the second lowest ERA in the National League (2.28), trailing Paul Skenes.

Arizona won its fourth straight game, moving to 13-8 since selling at the trade deadline.

The Diamondbacks (64-66) put together a loud, two-out rally in the first inning with a Corbin Carroll ground-rule double, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. RBI single, Gabriel Moreno RBI double and Blaze Alexander RBI ground-rule double. All four balls were hit over 100 mph.

“We just put pressure on him from the very beginning, and I think that’s what good teams do,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “Offensively, we’re one of the top teams in the league for a reason.”

Gurriel hit a two-run home run in the third inning, and Geraldo Perdomo crushed a 423-foot, two-run blast in the fourth. It was the furthest ball Perdomo had hit right-handed in his career (399 being the previous high). Perdomo has reached base safely in 19 of 21 games played in August.

“The at-bats we put them together, got on base, quality at-bats,” Perdomo said. “That guy has been pretty good the last two years, so we were just patient and try to be us all the time.”

Gurriel, meanwhile, is riding a nine-game hitting streak with multiple RBIs in six of the games. His 28 RBIs in August lead the league.

The Diamondbacks took a 7-0 lead into the fifth inning and quickly extended the lead on a solo blast from Blaze Alexander against Reds reliever Zach Maxwell. Alexander finished the game 3-for-4, a triple shy of the cycle.

Side note: Maxwell, also known as “Big Sugar,” is a 6-foot-6, 275-pound reliever who pumps 100 mph and made his MLB debut on Saturday. He struck out five hitters in two innings.

Diamondbacks’ pitching plan works, and a record is set

The other key to Arizona’s victory on Saturday was the effectiveness of an unorthodox pitching strategy.

Jalen Beeks started as the opener and threw a 1-2-3 first inning after he threw a warm-up pitch during the pregame hype video and lights show.

Nabil Crismatt followed with four scoreless innings, as he has allowed one earned run in nine innings this year with Arizona.

The Reds finally broke the shutout in the eighth inning on a single from Austin Hays off Jake Woodford.

The Diamondbacks got the run back and another on RBI bloop singles from Ketel Marte and Perdomo in the bottom half. Eight of Arizona’s 10 runs came with two outs.

Woodford finished the game, earning a save for his four innings of work.

Woodford became the 15th Diamondbacks pitcher to record a save this season, as the club has set a major league record for the most pitchers recording a save in a single season.

Diamondbacks win 4 straight games

After losing four games in a row, including three in Colorado, the Diamondbacks are on a roll back at home. Arizona won three one-run games with two walk-off hits this week in a series of exciting finishes, and Saturday was a dominant performance from start to finish.

“Tough series against Colorado, but I think these past couple games, two walk-offs, the energy’s really good in here,” Alexander said. “Obviously a big win today. Put up a lot of runs. We know what we gotta do.”

“ We feel good,” Beeks said. “The vibes in the clubhouse are really good. This season’s not over for us. We’re working our butts off and we’re gonna try to see what happens and make a push for this thing. We are very united in this clubhouse right now.”

The playoff picture has not changed in the sense of Arizona being behind the 8-ball, 5.5 games back of the New York Mets for the final Wild Card Spot. There are 32 games left to play, less than 20% of the season.

The D-backs have, however, caught up to several teams in their path, tying the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday after passing the San Francisco Giants and Miami Marlins. Arizona is now three games back of Cincinnati, and a sweep on Saturday could go a long way.

“Things change fast,” Lovullo said. “We let some things slide away from us in Colorado. We know that we let some wins get away from us. … I don’t think there’s panic in that room … We gotta play baseball games like that right there. When we do that, we’re gonna run some people down.”

Up next for Diamondbacks

The series concludes on Sunday at 1:10 p.m.

Zac Gallen (5.28 ERA) will start for the Diamondbacks, while right-hander Brady Singer (4.18 ERA) will pitch for Cincinnati.

The D-backs will look to return the favor after getting swept at Great American Ballpark earlier this season. They defeated the Reds 6-5 in 11 innings on Friday.
