D-backs signing Alex Bregman a ‘longshot’ as Ketel Marte trade front is quiet

The recent holiday stretch on the calendar didn’t shake anything loose in regard to Alex Bregman and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

According to Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro, a Bregman acquisition is a “longshot” with the Ketel Marte trade noise quiet.

“To this point, (the D-backs) have not gotten a package that is deemed good enough to make a Ketel Marte trade,” Gambadoro said Friday on Burns & Gambo.

Recent reports suggested that there’s a scenario where Arizona can hold onto both Bregman and Marte, but Gambadoro shot that down. If the free agent infielder does indeed come to the desert, Marte would be playing somewhere else.

Bregman is a three-time MLB All-Star who spent his first nine seasons with the Houston Astros. His linkage to the D-backs hasn’t been a question of fit but of economics.

The 31-year-old opted out of two years and $80 million remaining on his contract with the Boston Red Sox after one season.

“He wants five years and all this money, which is not in the wheelhouse of the Arizona Diamondbacks, so the numbers would have to come down. They’d have to get very creative,” Gambadoro said.

There were previous reports that the Red Sox getting first baseman Willson Contreras could put them out of the running.

However, Boston is reportedly continuing to look for an infield bat, with Marte among the candidates. Bregman is also in that group, along with Bo Bichette, Isaac Paredes and Brandon Donovan.

The Tampa Bay Rays also remain a team still in the race for Arizona’s star second baseman with a team-friendly contract.
