Brewers beat Phillies, meaning Diamondbacks cannot be eliminated on Wednesday

The Milwaukee Brewers shut down the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday, 4-1, which means no matter how the rest of the evening’s games unfold, the Arizona Diamondbacks’ postseason hopes will remain alive until at least Thursday.

The D-backs entered Wednesday with the possibility of getting eliminated from playoff contention with a loss paired with wins by Philadelphia (87-71) and the San Diego Padres (87-70).

The Phillies’ loss kept their magic number at two. It would drop to one if the D-backs (83-74) lose on Wednesday to the Colorado Rockies, whom the they took a 4-0 lead over in the first inning at Coors Field.

Arizona’s game was in progress when the final out in Philadelphia was recorded. The Padres, meanwhile, had not gotten started yet at Dodger Stadium with first pitch at 7:10 p.m. MST.

Christian Yelich and Brice Turang hit solo home runs for Milwaukee on Wednesday.

The Phillies scored their only run in the second inning after loading the bases with no outs against Brewers starter Logan Henderson. Henderson allowed four hits and one run over five innings to help the NL Central-champion Brewers win their 99th game of the season.

The Phillies have one more game against Milwaukee before hosting the Tampa Bay Rays over the final weekend.
