Corbin Carroll crushes 474-foot home run, Lourdes Gurriel adds own HR in late loss vs. Rockies

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll got every last ounce of power behind a 474-foot home run on Sunday at the Colorado Rockies for MLB’s third-longest bomb of the season.

That solo homer tied the series finale at 1-1 before Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit his own as the very next batter to give Arizona its first lead in the top of the sixth inning. His, by contrast, traveled a full 100 feet shorter to left field (374 feet).

Through three at-bats on Sunday, Gurriel had five hits and seven RBIs in the four-game series at Coors Field.

It was Carroll’s 27th home run of the season, as every one since 26 has added to a career season for the star.

The offensive explosion was just beginning, as Jake McCarthy, Tyler Locklear and Alek Thomas all singled with no outs recorded by Colorado. After nine D-backs players came to the plate, they produced four runs on five hits and one throwing error.

The Diamondbacks took a 4-1 lead despite being 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position through six frames, including seven men left on base.

Newly called-up pitcher Nabil Crismatt threw four scoreless innings, notably retiring the first 11 Rockies batters before allowing a single to shortstop Ezequiel Tovar. He tossed 62 pitches and struck out five while walking only one in his Arizona debut.

Crismatt almost surrendered more than one in the fifth when Tyler Freeman nearly had a base hit to left field, but McCarthy swooped in for inning-ending out.

The accompanying bullpen didn’t hold up its end of the bargain for the second straight game, allowing five runs in the final three frames to lose the road series to the worst team in MLB.
