Corbin Carroll smashes 414-foot homer for 1st HR by Diamondback in MLB All-Star Game history

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll launched a 414-foot solo home run that gave the National League a 6-0 lead in Tuesday’s MLB All-Star Game.

It was an especially impressive feat since it came against Detroit Tigers pitcher Casey Mize, who had given up just 12 home runs to 369 batters over the “first half” of the season. It was also the first home run by a Diamondback in All-Star Game history.

Carroll’s deep shot was the NL’s second homer of the sixth inning after Pete Alonso broke the game open with a three-run shot that made it 5-0. The 414 feet Carroll’s bomb reached dwarfed Alonso’s 367-foot shot.

The Diamondbacks outfielder has become more of a power hitter in his third full season. His 21 home runs through the “first half” were just four shy of already setting a new career mark in a season.

Eugenio Suarez, who joined Carroll as an NL All-Star reserve, grounded out to second in his first plate appearance and took a pitch to his pinky in his second. He remained in the game as a runner.

Diamondbacks hitters made a habit of getting runs off star Tiger pitchers on Tuesday, as Ketel Marte had a double down the right-field line off Tarik Skubal in the first inning to bring home the game’s first two runs.

The NL took the win after the first-ever swing-off, which now decides All-Star games when the score is tied after nine innings. The score was 6-6 after nine, and Kyle Schwarber’s three bombs clinched the NL win, their second since 2012.
