Corbin Carroll smashes 2 home runs off Justin Verlander in win vs. Giants

SAN FRANCISCO — Arizona Diamondbacks right fielder Corbin Carroll took San Francisco Giants starter and likely future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander deep twice within the first five innings of Monday’s 2-1 victory at Oracle Park.

Carroll now owns seven career multi-home run games, three during the first 42 games of this season.

D-backs starting pitcher Merrill Kelly allowed one run through seven innings, and Shelby Miller recorded the save.

After walking to lead off the ballgame, Carroll smoked a fastball the opposite way for his 12th home run of the year during the third inning. It was his first home run this year to left field.

“Hitter’s count, had to come to me and gave me a pretty good fastball to hit,” Carroll said. “Just was able to not do too much and put a good swing on it. Put it out the other way.”

In the fifth, Carroll unloaded on a 1-1 sweeper to center field. It traveled a projected 419 feet, not an easy thing to do at pitcher-friendly Oracle Park.

“Been not feeling too great recently, so to have those two swings on two different pitch types was awesome to see,” Carroll said.  ”Didn’t contribute much to that Dodger series, so to be able to help us out tonight felt good.”

“I’m glad he’s on our team,” Kelly said. “Oppo in any park is tough, but especially here when the wind’s swirling, to put a ball oppo is impressive.”

His 13 home runs rank third in MLB, only trailing Kyle Schwarber and Aaron Judge with 14 each, who have been among the league’s top sluggers for years.

Carroll is also tied for the league lead in multi-homer games this season, as Tyler Soderstrom of the Athletics was the only player with three of them coming into Monday, per Stathead.

“I’m not surprised,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “He worked extremely hard last year. We all saw him go through that. The second half was real good. Took it into the offseason and continued to make improvements.”

The Diamondbacks scored eight runs off Verlander — now 42 years old — last September while he was pitching for the Houston Astros. Pavin Smith memorably hit three home runs that game, two off Verlander.

Verlander allowed two earned runs in six innings on Monday, giving up nine hits but keeping his team in it.

He was outdueled by Kelly, however, who is on quite a run with a 2.36 ERA in his last seven outings.

Arizona continues its series against San Francisco on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m.
