Diamondbacks’ Torey Lovullo targeting weekend return to lineup for Corbin Carroll

Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star Corbin Carroll was out of the lineup for a second straight day on Friday with a tight left hip flexor, but manager Torey Lovullo said his concern was minimal.

Lovullo said Carroll was not available to come off the bench on Thursday but would be on Friday, and the target is to get him back in the lineup on Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies. Carroll did not play in Friday’s 5-4 win.

“He had a really good night. He woke up this morning and said he felt well enough to go out, take (batting practice), test this thing and see how it feels,” Lovullo told Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo pregame on Friday.

“We just got out of a meeting with some position players. He looked very encouraged. What we like to do after somebody’s taken out of the lineup or needs to stay out because of an injury is give them a full workday, which we’re going to get today.”

Carroll told reporters, including D-backs TV reporter Jody Jackson, at Citizens Bank Park on Friday that he was feeling better and would not need imaging.

Carroll last started on Wednesday against the New York Mets, his 500th career game, when he hit two doubles and a triple in a 7-2 win.

The Diamondbacks and Phillies play at 10:05 a.m. MST on Saturday with Brandon Pfaadt on the mound for Arizona and Taijuan Walker for Philadelphia.
