Diamondbacks place Corbin Carroll on injured list with wrist fracture

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed star outfielder Corbin Carroll on the injured list with a chip fracture in his left wrist, manager Torey Lovullo told reporters in Chicago after Monday’s 10-0 win over the White Sox.

The move went official on Tuesday, with outfielder Jake McCarthy getting recalled from Triple-A Reno.

Carroll’s IL stint is retroactive to Saturday.

Carroll has not played since getting hit in the hand by a Justin Bruihl sinker on Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays. He underwent imaging on Monday, and he will join a seemingly ever-growing list of key contributors on the IL.

The Diamondbacks just put starting catcher Gabriel Moreno on the IL with a hairline fracture on his right pointer finger on Thursday. Pitchers Corbin Burnes, Justin Martinez, Tommy Henry and A.J. Puk have all been lost to season-ending elbow surgeries just in the past month. Third baseman Eugenio Suarez (hand contusion) and first baseman Josh Naylor (shoulder discomfort) both exited Monday’s game and are considered “day-to-day” for the time being.

Carroll had positioned himself to make the National League All-Star team with a resurgent first half. He hits the shelf with a .255/.341/.573 slash line, 20 home runs, a league-leading nine triples, 44 RBIs and 10 stolen bases.

In terms of value, Carroll entered Monday seventh in Major League Baseball with 3.5 WAR (FanGraphs), as he is top five in both slugging percentage and extra-base hits.

Carroll fought through a difficult first half last season and came out on the other side with dominant numbers over the closing two months. He made mechanical tweaks this past offseason, most visibly with his hand placement, which had appeared to pay off with an incredible power surge.

Jake McCarthy rejoins the D-backs amid Corbin Carroll’s injured list assignment

McCarthy was optioned on April 21 after a miserable start at the plate through 14 games (0.73 batting average). For Triple-A Reno, McCarthy has hit .314 with an .840 OPS in 237 plate appearances. He’s added only one home run but hit 15 doubles with 12 steals in his time with the Aces.

There was no clear spot for the left-handed-hitting McCarthy with Alek Thomas starting in center against righties and Tim Tawa doing so versus lefties, but the injury has created an opportunity to McCarthy to find his footing again in the major leagues.

He hit .285 with an OPS of .749 in 142 games last season.

The Diamondbacks have 19 more games before the All-Star break and are 2.5 games back of the third NL Wild Card spot. Arizona has the highest-scoring offense in the NL over its last 13 games, but Carroll’s injury will be another tall hurdle on a track full of them.
