Diamondbacks’ Corbin Carroll to get MRI on Thursday

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll has been struggling through lower back discomfort, and he will undergo an MRI on Thursday after the team gets back to Phoenix, Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro reported on Wednesday.

Manager Torey Lovullo told reporters on Tuesday that Carroll would likely need imaging after he was scratched from the lineup in Kansas City. Lovullo said Carroll would not play in their series finale on Wednesday against the Royals.

Carroll said he suffered a back spasm last week during Arizona’s home series against the Philadelphia Phillies. He made 44 start starts before taking a seat on Monday, when he came off the bench late in the D-backs’ 5-4 win.

The All-Star has gone through his ups and downs this season both in terms of performance and health. At the plate, Carroll was great through mid-June, suffered a miserable July and started to tick back up in August before a late-month slump.

Overall, Carroll owns an .800 OPS with 19 home runs, 16 triples and 21 stolen bases, and he is a candidate for a Gold Glove and the All-MLB First Team for right field.

The Diamondbacks have struggled to hit lately with the fewest runs scored and worst slugging percentage in MLB since the start of September. Carroll’s lulls have contributed to the malaise, but he is a game-changer when clicking. Whether he will be healthy enough to get back on track is now a late-season storyline for a team that has struggled to get fully healthy.
