Corbin Carroll walks off Rockies, Diamondbacks win 5th straight

PHOENIX — Eduardo Rodriguez dominated for seven shutout innings, and Corbin Carroll smacked a walk-off single to right field on Thursday, giving the Arizona Diamondbacks a 2-1 win over the Colorado Rockies to open a four-game series.

This was the second walk-off win of the week for the Diamondbacks and third of the year. Ketel Marte hit a game-winning home run on Tuesday, as Arizona’s top two hitters have come through in the clutch during this homestand. 

The Diamondbacks have won five straight games (season high) to improve to 26-23, starting this Rockies-Giants-Rockies-Giants stretch of the schedule 6-1.

“I think it’s been a little bit of everything. I think we’ve had some really good offensive games, and then we’ve got a day like today where we don’t swing it, and the pitching just kind of dominates,” Carroll said.

“I don’t count them, I just want to keep winning,” Rodriguez said of the streak.

Walk-off winners

The offense had trouble hitting all night, entering the ninth inning with three knocks. But the unit was working its walks, and that continued with Gabriel Moreno and Marte against Rockies right-hander Juan Mejia.

Moreno led off with an eight-pitch walk, and manager Torey Lovullo opted to pinch hit for Adrian Del Castillo with Jose Fernandez to drop a sacrifice bunt. The move ensured Marte would get an at-bat with a runner in scoring position, and when the Rockies pitched around him, Carroll had the opportunity to be the hero.

On a 2-2 pitch with two outs, Carroll punched a hanging sweeper through the 3-4 hole. Moreno dove across the plate, and Carroll ran into the outfield as his teammates chased after him.

It was Carroll’s fourth career walk-off hit, his first since 2024.

“I think he’s built for situations like that,” Lovullo said. “He wants to go out and be great. And that’s what I told him before the at-bat, I said, ‘Go be great, man. This is what it’s all about.'”

That hit was the Diamondbacks’ first with runners in scoring position all game, as they finished 1-for-9.

They worked eight walks, finding ways to create opportunities despite the bats going quiet.

“To get there, you’ve got to talk about the two at-bats before that,” Carroll said of his walk-off. “Just happy to get the job done.”

Carroll said his head was doing fine after getting hit by a throw on Tuesday. He said he had a little bump and appreciated getting a day off on Wednesday to reset.

E-Rod cooking at Chase Field

Rodriguez has been dominant at Chase Field this season, especially lately.

The lefty has tossed 22.1 innings with one earned run in his last three appearances at home. He has delivered at least seven innings in three of his last four starts, and the Diamondbacks are 6-1 in his last seven outings.

Rodriguez did not allow a hit until the fifth inning on Thursday, as he finished with four hits, one walk and four strikeouts.

Relying heavily on his four-seam fastball, the veteran kept the ball on the ground and avoided hard contact. Three out of 19 balls hit in play against him were over 90 mph.

A pair of defensive plays were key, as Nolan Arenado potentially saved a run with a backhand stop in the fifth inning, and Rodriguez threw a runner out on a squeeze attempt later that inning.

Rodriguez’s ERA lowered to 2.24.

The Diamondbacks’ offense gave him no run support, as no runs scored until the sixth inning.

Rockies starter Zach Agnos, a long reliever, threw five scoreless frames.

Arizona finally broke through after a walk from Ryan Waldschmidt and a single from Marte set up Carroll with runners on the corners in the sixth, and Waldschmidt scored on a fielder’s choice.

For Marte, that single marked his fifth multi-hit effort out of his last seven games.

Kevin Ginkel to the rescue

This game could have gotten out of hand for the Diamondbacks after Rodriguez exited, as it was not Juan Morillo’s night. He came out of the game after two hits, a walk and a hit batsman tied the score and set the Rockies up with the bases loaded and one out. It was the first time Morillo allowed a run at home all season.

Kevin Ginkel put out the fire with a pop-up and a groundout against Colorado’s third and fourth hitters in the lineup, Hunter Goodman and Ezequiel Tovar. Ginkel has allowed one earned run in eight appearances in May.

“Kevin Ginkel was unreal today,” Lovullo said. “Kevin Ginkel came in after warming up, getting hot and sitting down, reloaded within two or three pitches and came back into the game and got the two big outs. … That’s why we won this baseball game.”

Paul Sewald threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning, coming through in a non-save situation.

Friday night starters

Michael Soroka (3.49 ERA) will pitch for the Diamondbacks on Friday, while right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano (4.02) will go for Colorado.

Soroka threw 5.2 innings with two earned runs against the Rockies at Coors Field last weekend, while Sugano threw five innings with two earned runs against the D-backs during that series.
