Diamondbacks’ Corbin Carroll blasts 30th home run to put away Red Sox

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks responded quickly to the disappearance of their sizable lead late on Friday night, as Corbin Carroll put the Boston Red Sox away with his 30th home run of the season for a 10-5 win.

Taylor Rashi finished off the Red Sox in the ninth inning, bringing the Diamondbacks back to .500 at 71-71. The last time Arizona was .500 was on July 20 (50-50). The Diamondbacks have won three straight games and are 7-3 over their last 10.

The Red Sox scored four runs in the eighth inning off reliever Bryce Jarvis, cutting a 6-1 deficit to 6-5.

Geraldo Perdomo delivered his fourth hit of the ballgame to drive in a two-out insurance run in the bottom half, at the same time setting the table for Carroll behind him.

Carroll smoked a line drive off Red Sox reliever Justin Slaten that sailed over the right-field wall, a three-run shot to get all four runs back.

He is the fourth Diamondback to reach 30 home runs in a season since 2020 (Ketel Marte, Christian Walker and Eugenio Suarez). Carroll is now tied for 12th in MLB in home runs and ranks fifth in slugging percentage at .559.

“Happy with hitting that accomplishment, but excited for the rest of the season and seeing if we can add some more,” Carroll said.

He is one of three players all-time with 30-plus home runs, 16-plus triples and 20-plus stolen bases in a season. The others are Willie Mays and Jimmy Rollins.

“He’s a slug machine, and 30 home runs, in my opinion, I felt like that day was gonna be coming for him,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “The second half of last year helped him grow up and he’s just picked up where he left off.”

Starter Eduardo Rodriguez gave the Diamondbacks a quality start with six innings and one earned run, while home runs from Perdomo and Ildemaro Vargas gave them an early lead.

A key defensive play helped the Diamondbacks maintain that early advantage.

The Diamondbacks took a 2-1 lead into the third inning, and with two outs, Boston’s Romy Gonzalez knocked a base hit to center field. Blaze Alexander, starting his third career game in center field, unloaded a perfect strike home on the fly, and catcher Gabriel Moreno tagged out the would-be tying run.

Alexander has been given the opportunity to start in center against lefties, giving the Diamondbacks some flexibility with the lineup in not having to start left-handed bats Alek Thomas or Jake McCarthy. Alexander has a cannon, one he usually gets to fire off across the diamond along the infield. Being an outfielder allows him to let it loose a bit more.

Arizona followed up with back-to-back walks against Red Sox starter Payton Tolle, and Vargas busted the game open with a three-run blast to left in the third inning.

The Diamondbacks succeeded in making life difficult for Tolle, a touted prospect who made his second MLB start. Tolle threw 77 pitches in only three innings pitched with five earned runs.

The D-backs finished with 11 hits and seven walks, as everyone in the lineup reached base safely.

Jordan Lawlar continued to show confidence at the plate with a ground-rule double and a sacrifice fly.

“It wasn’t easy,” Lovullo said. “We had opportunities early on to break the game open. We didn’t, the Red Sox are a good team, they fought back. Then we broke the game open by not shutting down and having quality at-bats and building innings. And then finally got that big hit with Corbin.”

Taking a peek at the standings

The Diamondbacks reached .500, but they are still 5.5 games back of the third National League Wild Card spot.

However, there has been a shift. The New York Mets caught up to the San Diego Padres as the second and third Wild Card teams.

Reminder, while the Diamondbacks do not play the Mets again, they will visit the Padres for three games to end the season.

Arizona passed the Cincinnati Reds on Friday and remains 1.5 games back of the San Francisco Giants, whom the D-backs play six more times.

Chances remain slim, but the opportunity to continue playing meaningful baseball has been a motivating factor.

“Obviously we put ourselves in a position, it’s not favorable right now, but again, to still be playing meaningful baseball is awesome and we just wanna keep going,” Carroll said.

“I looked up and we were 70-71,” Alexander said. “I’m like, we’re right there. It’s cool. Let’s get over .500 tomorrow.”
