D-backs’ Josh Rojas exits game after getting hit in hand with pitch vs. Cubs

Diamondbacks 3B Josh Rojas exited Saturday's game in the first inning after getting hit by a pitch by Cubs lefty Justin Steele.

Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Josh Rojas’ encore to a three-home run performance Friday was short-lived on Saturday against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Rojas exited the game in the first inning after getting hit by a pitch by Cubs lefty Justin Steele.

He was hit in the left hand while checking his swing on a up-and-in fastball. To add insult, the home-plate umpire ruled Rojas went around on his check swing for strike three.

The third baseman took exception, as did manager Torey Lovullo.

The D-backs announced Rojas exited due to a left hand contusion.

Backup infielder Yonny Hernandez came in to replace Rojas at third.

Rojas had a career day on Friday, blasting his first, second and third home runs of the season. He missed the first 26 games of 2022 with an oblique strain.

Arizona’s depth took a hit this week as three players went on the injured list: outfielder Cooper Hummel, shortstop Nick Ahmed and catcher Jose Herrera.
