D-backs resolve Zach Davies’ mutual option, RHP set to become free agent

The MLB Players Association announced RHP Zach Davies resolved his option with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday and will become a free agent.

Davies finished the year with a 2-5 record, 4.09 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over 27 games played. He signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract last offseason and will receive a $250,000 buyout through his mutual option for 2023.

Davies got off to a fantastic beginning to the year, allowing three or fewer runs in six of his first seven starts while posting a 3.57 ERA. His name became one to watch at the trade deadline before he injured his shoulder and missed the whole month of July.

The news comes after the Diamondbacks brought up a plethora of starting rookie pitching talent in 2022 including Drey Jameson, Tommy Henry and Rhyne Nelson. Arizona also has two starting pitchers ranked in its top-five minor league prospects with Brandon Pfaadt (AAA) and Blake Walston (AA), according to MLB.com.

Free agents are eligible to sign with any team starting on Thursday at 5 p.m. EST but can negotiate with their 2022 team until then.

As the D-backs rotation gets some clarity, the starting pitchers that currently either have or are fighting for a rotation spot include Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, Madison Bumgarner and the three rookies.
