The Arizona Diamondbacks signed left-handed starting pitcher Dallas Keuchel to a minor league deal on Tuesday.

The move was first reported by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal on Monday.

Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro reports that the left-hander’s deal with the D-backs allows Keuhel to opt out if he is not called up to the big league club by the end of the month.

Keuchel, 34, is a two-time All-Star and won the American League Cy Young award in 2015 with the Houston Astros. The lefty pitched in Houston for his first seven seasons, posting a 3.66 ERA and 1.250 WHIP.

After one year with the Atlanta Braves in 2019, Keuchel signed a three-year, $55.5 million deal with the Chicago White Sox.

He failed to replicate those great numbers from his days with the Astros, recording a 4.79 ERA and 1.500 WHIP in Chicago despite an encouraging start to his time there. He sported a 1.99 ERA for his 11 outings in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

Keuchel made eight starts this season for the White Sox and gave up 28 earned runs across 32.0 innings for a 7.88 ERA. He was designated for assignment by Chicago on May 28.

The Diamondbacks’ starting rotation recently had right-hander Humberto Castellanos, the team’s No. 5 starter, placed on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday due to a strained right elbow.
