Diamondbacks come back from down 4 runs, bullpen cannot stop Marlins’ offense in wild loss

Ketel Marte drove in three runs on three hits to help the Arizona Diamondbacks overcome a four-run deficit, but the Marlins’ offense was relentless in a Miami 10-6 win on Tuesday.
The Diamondbacks (34-32) plated three runs in the eighth inning, two on a Marte single with an 0-2 count, to tie the ballgame, but the Marlins responded immediately by snapping reliever Brandyn Garcia’s nine-game scoreless streak with four runs.
It was the bottom of the Marlins’ order that just kept getting on base, as eight-nine hitters Joe Mack and Connor Norby went 5-for-5 combined with two walks and a hit-by-pitch, scoring four runs.
The Arizona bullpen had what has been a rare off night, with Taylor Clarke and Garcia responsible for six earned runs, while Kevin Ginkel allowed back-to-back RBI hits to score his inherited runners.
Corbin Carroll and Gabriel Moreno each went yard for the second straight game, hitting a pair of no-doubters a combined 817 feet. Geraldo Perdomo reached base five times (two singles, three walks), as the Diamondbacks’ core all contributed (7-for-15, six RBIs and five walks).
The Diamondbacks had baserunners aboard in every inning, as this was their best offensive game by runs scored since the start of June. And they only went 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position, continuing a recent trend of leaving meat on the bone.
Marte was on deck as the potential tying run in the ninth inning, but Tommy Troy (who reached base three times) ended the game with a flyout with two runners aboard.
Another area that continues to hold Arizona back is the designated hitter spot, as Pavin Smith went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.
The D-backs entered Tuesday’s game with a .570 OPS from their DHs, the second lowest in MLB. Arizona signed Max Kepler for another left-handed bat, but he won’t be eligible to return from suspension until later this month. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. could also assist in this area, as he continues to get Arizona Complex League at-bats in his rehab from a hamstring strain.
Zac Gallen back in Miami
Zac Gallen made the start for Arizona and worked a pretty typical stat line for his season: 5.1 innings, four earned runs. He settled in after allowing a run in each of the first three innings but left a baserunner aboard in the sixth, who scored.
His ERA went up to 5.43 even on a day when he was not awful and actually missed a lot more bats than usual. He induced 14 whiffs but only struck out three and allowed nine hits for the second straight start.
The D-backs have lost three straight games started by Gallen.
The Diamondbacks as a pitching staff allowed 15 hits for the second time in its last four games (16 on Friday).
Arizona had dominated at loanDepot Park over the past few years, as the club was 10-2 in its previous 12 games in Miami, including road sweeps in 2024 and 2025.

Gallen was one of the main factors (the other factor was leaving 10+ runners on the bases) in losing the game. He gave up four runs in 5.1 which is a game ERA of 6.75. Last year, Gallen had a season ERA of 4.83 which made him one of the nine worst starting pitchers in the MLB. Unless there are going to be a rash of starting pitchers that are pitching worse than Gallen, Gallen is going to be on of the nine worst starting pitchers in the MLB with an ERA of 5.43...two years running!
First, he had a game ERA of 6.75 which caused his season ERA to go up...please understand how ERA are calculated and how basic statistics work.
Second, he wasn't awful?...an game ERA of 6.75 SUCKS for a starter!!!
Yes, the bullpen give up runs today...you can't fault the bullpen because the three relievers who have been super good and reliable had an off day...it sucks that all three had an off day for the same game but it does happen. As a reader who have blasted the bullpen last season, they are doing well this year so far.
Gallen lost the game today by giving up four runs and putting the Dbacks in a hole. Stop covering for Gallen and stop gaslighting the fans!!!
I have noticed the double and triple standards that the announcers and media use.
For example, I haven't heard nothing about Waldschmidt batting average dropping from the .330s down to .265. Like Fernandez, teams are learning how to pitch to Waldschmidt...part of the learning curve for most if not all rookies. The announcers bashed Jose when his batting average went down but nothing about Ryan.
Tonight, the announcers went on about how Pavin Smith hits so well in LoanDepot Park...he went 0-4 as the DH which should be the hitter with the highest BA, highest RBI and/or the most home runs...not a player that is hitting .136. He has been with the organization for 10 years and 7 years in the majors AND he hasn't produced...trade, sell or release him.
Just around .500 as usual, guess it could be worse. Mediocrity in this town is a success. Been here since 1978 if anyone cares, watched it all.
