Diamondbacks designate Carlos Santana for assignment

Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Carlos Santana was reinstated from the 60-day injured list and designated for assignment on Wednesday.

Additionally, the team recalled pitcher Mitch Bratt from Triple-A Reno ahead of his start against the St. Louis Cardinals and optioned pitcher Kohl Drake to the Aces.

The 40-year-old first baseman, who signed a one-year contract with Arizona this past offseason, last played for the Diamondbacks on April 5. He slashed .083/.154/.125 with a .279 OPS in eight games for Arizona.

He was placed on the 10-day injured list on April 7 (retroactive to April 6) with a strained right adductor.

Santana was then sent to Reno on a rehab assignment on May 2 but re-injured himself before being transferred to the 60-day IL on June 1. He went on another rehab assignment this month before Wednesday’s designation for assignment.

Diamondbacks call up Mitch Bratt

Bratt is set to make his MLB debut on Wednesday with injuries affecting Arizona’s starting rotation. He is the second Diamondbacks pitcher to do so in recent days after Jose Cabrera got the nod on Sunday.

The 22-year-old Bratt and Drake were part of the Merrill Kelly trade to the Texas Rangers last year.

Bratt is 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA and 0.947 WHIP across 11 starts for Reno this year.

Drake, meanwhile, heads back to Reno after getting called up on Sunday. He did not appear in a game for Arizona before being sent back down.

The Diamondbacks are back in action against the Cardinals on Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 4:45 p.m. and can be heard on the Arizona Sports app.
