The Arizona Diamondbacks designated Pavin Smith for assignment, according to multiple reports.
Ryan Waldschmidt was recalled from Triple-A Reno in the roster move.
The decision comes after a 3-1 win to tie a four-game series with the San Diego Padres.
Smith, a 2017 first-round draft pick by Arizona and first selection of general manager Mike Hazen, hit .141 (11-for-78) this season while sporting a .236 on-base percentage and .428 OPS. He never found his footing at the plate after missing time for a left elbow injury.
Across more than six seasons (476 games), the 30-year-old slashed .241/.325/.394, getting the most run in 2021 with 498 at-bats in 145 games. He had a career-best 27 doubles and 11 home runs that season.
Waldschmidt made his big league debut earlier this season, seeing 33 games of action (slashed .259/.314/357) before being sent down to the Triple-A level.
In Reno, the outfielder is slashing .288/.405/.492 in 51 games with 55 hits (24 for extra-bases), 29 RBIs and 31 walks.
The D-backs begin a three-game series at the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday, their last before the All-Star Break.

HALLELUJAH!!!!! They finally did something about Smith's black hole in the lineup. Now, they need to send Tawa down and DFA Gallen and fire Lovullo!!
Great win tonight, though. MAYBE (just maybe) Kelly has turned a corner!!!
It's about time! Who's next, and when is Locklear coming-up?
Thank you, ESPN!!! It was the ESPN 'spotlight' that caused this move. It is my guess that the front office was embarrassed by the statistics that ESPN put up on Pavin Smith during the game.
I am sure that the talking heads will be talking about this move on their Friday shows, I am wondering if they are going to talk about how irresponsible that they have been? My point is IF the local media had done their job, this move would have happened sooner. They can still be homers but they need to be objective when it calls for it.
It is a start...
