The Arizona Diamondbacks have “some level of interest in” two starting pitchers and three left-handed hitters, with the trade deadline looming, Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro reported Monday.

Gambadoro’s five targets:

• Detroit Tigers starter Casey Mize
• St. Louis Cardinals lefty 1B Alec Burleson
• New York Mets starter Clay Holmes
• St. Louis Cardinals LHH OF/DH Lars Nootbaar
• Cincinnati Reds LHH 1B/DH Nathaniel Lowe

Gambadoro added Cincinnati Reds’ left-handed hitting first baseman Nathaniel Lowe is of lower interest but did not rule him out, and there could be another “player or two” of interest whom could end up in Arizona.

Detroit Tigers starter Casey Mize

Mize was an All-Star last year for the first time and has built on that breakout campaign with a 2.70 ERA this season. He has spent two stints on the injured list for adductor issues, which have limited him to 16 starts, although he has been active since June 17.

Mize had some groin tightness a couple starts ago and saw his velocity down a tick in his most recent outing, but he still managed to throw six one-run innings. Mize has allowed three earned runs or fewer in 14 of 16 starts this season.

His walk rate is among the lowest in the league (5.6%), and he primarily throws a four-seamer, slider and splitter that have each held batters to a .213 average or worse.

The right-hander will be a free agent at the end of the season.

St. Louis Cardinals lefty 1B Alec Burleson

Burleson is in his fifth season with the Cardinals, with a career .756 OPS. He has experience in the outfield, at first base and as a designated hitter.

Through 111 games this season, the 27-year-old is slashing .284/.347/.458 and was a Silver Slugger last year.

Burleson has two more years of arbitration before he becomes a free agent in 2029.

New York Mets starter Clay Holmes

The 33-year-old closer-turned-starter was having a great start to the year in New York until he suffered a fractured fibula on a comebacker against the Yankees on May 15. He has not made a major league appearance since, although he pitched in a rehab game on Tuesday in Triple-A.

In nine starts this season, Holmes has worked a 2.39 ERA with a 55% ground ball rate.

St. Louis Cardinals LHH OF/DH Lars Nootbaar

Nootbaar is 28 years old and will enter free agency after the 2027 season.

The Southern California native has been with the Cardinals for his entire career, debuting in 2021. He missed all of April and May this season due to a procedure on his heels last year, but he returned on June 5 and provided a boost for the St. Louis lineup.

He hit for an .872 OPS in June before cooling off in July.

Nootbaar has extreme platoon splits this season with a .737 OPS against righties and .483 OPS versus lefties. His career splits are more even (.764 to .677).

He works walks at an elite 13.1% clip and does not chase, fitting into Arizona’s hitting philosophies.

Cincinnati Reds LHH 1B/DH Nathaniel Lowe

Lowe is a 31-year-old, left-handed hitter who has won a Silver Slugger, a Gold Glove and a World Series during his eight-year MLB career thus far.

He was a member of the 2023 Texas Rangers who took on the Diamondbacks in the 2023 World Series.

Lowe joined the Reds on a minor league deal last offseason and has performed well against right-handed pitching with an .885 OPS and 12 home runs after the weekend. He has started primarily at designated hitter for the Reds.

The 6-foot-4 hitter owns above-average walks rates and bat speed and could provide improved production at either first base or designated hitter.

He will be a free agent at the end of the year.
