Arizona Diamondbacks southpaw Caleb Smith has struggled in 2021 and is being moved to the bullpen, manager Torey Lovullo said on Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo on Tuesday.

Smith has started in 13 games for the D-backs this year, but has 31 total appearances.

In his last seven starts on the mound, Smith is 1-5 with a 10.73 ERA, giving up 33 earned runs in those starts. His last outing was this past Friday in San Diego, where he gave up five earned runs in just 1.1 innings of work.

July was a tough month for Smith, who threw 19.2 innings, giving up 21 runs in four starts. August hasn’t gotten off to better start for the lefty, already giving up 10 runs in just two appearances.

Lovullo said the team has not determined who will take Smith’s spot in the rotation.

The D-backs begin a two-game series against the MLB-best San Francisco Giants on Tuesday.
