Diamondbacks moving on from longtime broadcaster Steve Berthiaume

The Arizona Diamondbacks will not retain longtime television play-by-play broadcaster Steve Berthiaume, the team confirmed to Arizona Sports on Monday.

Nick Piecoro of AZCentral.com first reported the decision, as Berthiaume’s contract with the club is up. The team has not decided who will take over as the lead TV play-by-play commentator.

Chris Garagiola has been the radio voice of the Diamondbacks since Greg Schulte retired after the 2023 playoffs, and Piecoro reported that he will be considered.

Berthiaume was introduced alongside former manager Bob Brenly as Arizona’s new broadcast team after the 2012 season, and Berthiaume followed with the longest run from a TV play-by-play broadcaster in club history — Schulte holds that distinction between TV and radio (1998-2023).

Berthiaume previously worked for ESPN as a SportsCenter anchor, Baseball Tonight host and play-by-play broadcaster.

He spent enough time with the D-backs to see their broadcasts move from a regional a sports network model to MLB-run programs, and he has worked with multiple color analysts in recent seasons (Tom Candiotti, Luis Gonzalez and Josh Collmenter) with Brenly primarily sticking with home games.

This isn’t a win for the DBacks. With Steve being let go, I would think Bob will step down. I’m sure Chris Garagillo will take the job, for a lot less money but Bob and Steve had a good chemistry between them and that can’t be replaced. I’m starting to like Josh but he can’t replace Bob permanently
