Diamondbacks offense remains flat in Opening Day loss to Padres

With the Arizona Diamondbacks’ 7-2 loss on Opening Day Friday night to the San Diego Padres, the team has now scored five runs over 27 innings, following two exhibition losses to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The D-backs offense hit into two inning-ending double plays to start off the game Friday. First baseman Jake Lamb knocked a double to start the third, but wouldn’t even make it 90 more feet.

From there, the only batter to reach base again until Kole Calhoun’s solo homer in the seventh was Lamb on a walk in the fifth. That dinger for Calhoun was the last hit for Arizona in the game since he had singled in the second inning.

Starling Marte and Christian Walker’s singles scored Marte for the second and last run of the game for the D-backs.

Calhoun said after the game the D-backs won’t take the Dodgers games into account when it comes to any offensive woes building up.

“It’s one game and we’re not gonna press after one game,” he said. “Not even gonna look into the Dodgers series because those are exhibition games.”

David Peralta and Eduardo Escobar each went 0-for-4 on the night, and both Ketel and Starling Marte adding a single meant only two times the top-four of the order would reach base in 16 plate appearances.

With the added urgency a 60-game season presents, it certainly changes how a three-game slump like this can be viewed.

The D-backs aren’t panicking.

“I’m not gonna be overly concerned about it right now,” Lovullo said. “I think we had some quality at-bats in some key situations.”

But they still digested the weak night at the plate and will look to change the narrative on Saturday.

“We’re very well aware of what their capabilities are but the bottom line is you gotta go in there and get the job done,” Lovullo said.
