Diamondbacks rally to top Giants for first win of season: By The Numbers

Coming into Tuesday’s game 0-3 and digging themselves into a four-run deficit in the top of the first inning against the San Francisco Giants, things were getting dire for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Starter Wade Miley settled down after that shaky opening frame and lasted seven innings. More importantly, Diamondbacks batters slowly built a comeback, starting with two runs in the bottom of the first.

Leadoff hitter Gerardo Parra knocked in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, and the D-backs held on from there, closing with a 5-4 decision.

Arizona claimed its first win of the season, while sending the Giants’ record to 1-1. Miley picked up his first victory of the year — in two starts — while Giants reliever Juan Gutierrez suffered the loss.

Here’s a look at the Diamondbacks’ come-from-behind victory by the numbers:

Outfielder Mark Trumbo had the first RBI-less game of his Diamondbacks career. He went 0-for-4 and his average dropped to .278. He didn’t strike out once in those hitless at-bats, but he did ground into two double plays.

Despite a Chris Owings misplay on a pop-up in the ninth inning that allowed a San Francisco base runner to get to second — which was counted as a hit — D-backs reliever Addison Reed did not allow a run in the frame and picked up his first save as a member of the D-backs. He struck out two and dropped his ERA to 6.00 in three total innings pitched on the year.

Center fielder A.J. Pollock was a bright spot with his 3-for-4 performance at the plate and one RBI, but it was his two runs scored — both in unconventional ways — that made the difference. On a close play at the plate, Pollock scored on a passed ball in the fourth inning to get the Diamondbacks within one, and then the 26-year-old outfielder recorded the go-ahead run in the sixth on Parra’s sacrifice fly to left field.

The Diamondbacks avoided going 0-4, which would have tied their second-worst start to a season in franchise history. Their worst record to open a season was 0-5, which happened in their inaugural year.

After giving up a three-run homer to Brandon Belt in the first inning, Miley retired 15 straight batters until walking Buster Posey in the sixth. The Diamondbacks were down 4-3 at that time but scored two in the bottom of the frame; Miley pitched a scoreless seventh and picked up the win.

First baseman Paul Goldschmidt went 2-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to 23 games, which is one behind Tony Womack for the second-longest streak in franchise history — after Luis Gonzalez’s 30-game run in 1999. Goldschmidt had one double and picked up his first RBI of the season Tuesday.

That first inning was rough for Miley. The 27-year-old left hander gave up four hits — one a homer — and four runs and threw one wild pitch. He tossed 28 pitches in all before getting out of the frame. He finished with 92 pitches — 65 for strikes — in seven innings. He struck out five and walked one in that span.

Giants starter Matt Cain, a 29-year-old three-time All-Star, only lasted five innings Tuesday, as he threw 99 pitches in his start and gave up seven hits and three runs (two earned). Cain struck out two and walked two, finishing with a no decision.

Chase Field had a paltry attendance of 18,974 Tuesday — nearly 30,000 fewer people than Monday’s home opener. In 2013, the team drew 28,356 in its second home game of the year, which also took place on a Tuesday.
