The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled utility infielder-outfielder Tim Tawa from Triple-A Reno ahead of Sunday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Tawa will start at third base and will bat seventh in the lineup.

Infielder LuJames Groover was optioned to Reno in a corresponding move. Groover has had five at-bats since June 25, as the rookie has not had much playing time with Pavin Smith and Ildemaro Vargas getting starts at first base. In 15 games, Groover slashed .167/.259/.271 with a home run and four RBIs.

Tawa has been in and out of the majors this season, last appearing with the Diamondbacks on June 24 against the St. Louis Cardinals. In 64 at-bats, Tawa is slashing .172/.270/.266 with a homer and eight RBIs.

In 75 at-bats with Reno, Tawa is slashing .320/.409/.733 with seven home runs and 21 RBIs while registering a 1.142 OPS.

The D-backs (44-44) look to win the series and get back above .500 after a 4-3 win over the Brewers (54-33) on Saturday.

All-Star lefty Eduardo Rodriguez (7-2, 2.21 ERA) is set to take the mound for Arizona against Milwaukee righty Brandon Sproat (3-4, 5.28 ERA).

First pitch is at 1 p.m. The game can be listened to on 98.7 and the Arizona Sports app. The game is being streamed exclusively on Peacock

Why is tawa starting today? Does this mean arenado is sitting? He’s just starting to hit again. No need to try to win the series I guess. Wouldn’t want to hurt the brewer’s feelings

Like Pavin Smith, I don't know why Tim Tawa, who is a career .198 hitter that is currently batting .172 in the majors, is on the Dbacks team.

Unless the toothpicks of bats grow into mighty redwood, I am predicting that E-Rod will have a no-decision today for a lack of runs support.

Here are the players that are starting today on the Brewers that are batting below .240:

Hamilton .237
Sanchez .215
Ortiz .208

Here are the players that are starting today on the Dbacks that are batting below .240:

Perdomo .236
Gurriel .219
Troy .219
Tawa .172
Smith .152

Mike Hazen wasn't kidding when he said this past week that he failed to put together a team with power...he failed to put together a team that can even singles.

I don't understand TL's logic in benching players when they are beginning to hit, on a streak, etc. Unless they are looking to trade Tawa, a career .198 hitter, who is currently batting .172 in the majors, I don't see the reason why he was called up and/or starting today.

I agree with you that it looks like TL is not trying to win this game. Please remember that TL thinks that the season really starts after the All-Star break...where there are only 66 games left and TL expect his team to win 63% of these games to get into the third and last wild card. None of these teams in the previous nine seasons had a win streak of 63% over 66 games but this year team can do it.

I was going to pay for a month of service for Peacock but after reading that Tawa is back, I decided not to purchase.
