The Arizona Diamondbacks made several roster moves ahead of their doubleheader against the San Francisco Giants on Saturday, including appointing pitcher Mitch Bratt as the 27th man.
The Diamondbacks also recalled righty reliever Derek Law from Triple-A Reno. Lefty Kohl Drake, who started in Friday night’s game against the Giants, was optioned to Triple-A Reno.
Bratt (1-2, 4.54 ERA) will start the Diamondbacks’ second game of the doubleheader against the Giants, who have yet to name a starter. Merrill Kelly (8-12, 5.35 ERA) will start for the D-backs in the first game against Giants lefty Matt Wilkinson (0-1, 6.34 ERA). Wilkinson was appointed as the 27th man for the Giants as part of the doubleheader.
Bratt most recently started Sunday against the Cincinnati Reds and struggled, giving up three runs on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks in a 5-3 win. Bratt was optioned to Triple-A Reno Monday.
With Michael Soroka back on the injured list and Eduardo Rodriguez and Brandon Pfaadt having already pitched against the Chicago Cubs earlier this week, the D-backs had a dilemma on who would start in the doubleheader. Despite Bratt already being sent down, the D-backs and Giants are allowed to have a 27th roster spot for the doubleheader.
The D-backs hope to get some length out of the starters on Saturday, as the bullpen has labored through the first two games of the series with Jose Cabrera only pitching four and a third innings on Thursday and Drake only tossing four innings in Friday’s game.
The D-backs (72-64) enter Saturday’s doubleheader a half game back of the San Diego Padres (72-63) for the third and final Wild Card spot in the National League.
The first game will start at 1:05 p.m. MST, and the second starts at 7:05 p.m. MST.
