Diamondbacks shut down pitcher TJ McFarland due to bone spur

The Arizona Diamondbacks are shutting down pitcher T.J. McFarland, according to manager Torey Lovullo.

“He has some inflammation around that bone spur and we just felt the risk did not match the reward,” Lovullo said before Arizona’s game against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. “I told T.J. that I didn’t want to put him in a situation where he was going to go backwards and potentially need some type of procedure to get ready for next year.”

McFarland was sent back to Phoenix last Thursday after dealing with inflammation in his left elbow.

“He had a tremendous year and did exactly what we needed him to do throughout the course of this year and it’s time to rest and get well,” Lovullo said.

The skipper added that McFarland felt ready to go, but felt the decision to shut him down was the right move looking toward the future.

In 72 innings pitched (47 games), McFarland had an ERA of 2.00 with 42 strikeouts, a save and a hold to go with a WHIP of 1.19.
