Diamondbacks’ Eugenio Suarez has own home run derby with 2 vs. Angels

Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez was snubbed from an appearance in this season’s MLB Home Run Derby, so he had his own with two solo home runs in a 10-5 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night.

He reached 31 homers before the All-Star break, only trailing Arizona legend Luis Gonzalez (35) for the most in franchise history at the season’s midway point.

The first was cranked 434 feet with a 109.9-mph exit velocity, and the second was a bit quieter at 105.2 mph off the bat to barely clearly the right-center wall at Angel Stadium.

Suarez was responsible for both of the Diamondbacks runs through four innings — a home run in the second and fourth. He also upped his RBI total to 77, which was tied for third in MLB at the time.

Through two at-bats, Suarez already made amends for back-to-back games he went 0 for 4.

Starting pitcher Zac Gallen seemed to settle in after surrendering one run in the first with three strikeouts and six consecutive Angels retired, but coughed up three more in the fourth.

Then, after stranding center fielder Alek Thomas at first base in the fifth, Gallen gave up a two-run home run to Angels’ Mike Trout with no outs on the board to make it 6-2.

Gallen’s final line was six earned runs, eight hits and two walks in five innings. Despite the loss, his three strikeouts inched Gallen to within five of 1,000 for his career.
