Diamondbacks’ Eugenio Suarez hits go-ahead grand slam to beat the Yankees

Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez, fresh off winning National League Player of the Week, hit a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning to beat the New York Yankees 7-5 on Tuesday.

The Diamondbacks finally built an inning after recording one hit through seven: a two-run home run by Corbin Carroll in the third.

Geraldo Perdomo poked an RBI single to right field to cut the New York lead to 4-3, and a pair of walks loaded the bases with one out. The D-backs were at risk of letting the opportunity slip away. Josh Naylor struck out, and Suarez swung through a sinker over the middle to even the count at 2-2.

Yankees pitcher Mark Leiter Jr. offered a splitter to escape the jam, and Suarez smoked it deep to left field. Left fielder Cody Bellinger leaped at the wall but came up empty.

Suarez hit four home runs over opening weekend against the Chicago Cubs. Through five games, Suarez has five hits, all homers. He hit 30 last season.

The Diamondbacks scored five runs in the eighth inning one game after erupting for eight runs in the eighth inning of Sunday’s 10-6 comeback win over Chicago.

The late-game heroics salvaged ace starter Corbin Burnes’ D-backs debut after he left the game trailing 4-2. Burnes allowed four runs (two earned runs) in 4.1 innings with eight strikeouts, as a Naylor error at first base cost him two runs.

A.J. Puk receives Diamondbacks’ first save opportunity

The Diamondbacks have yet to name a closer, deciding to go by matchups to start the season.

That led manager Torey Lovullo to call on right-hander Justin Martinez in the eighth inning to face Yankees star Aaron Judge, whom he struck out with a splitter. Martinez punched out Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Anthony Volpe with 101 mph fastballs in a dominant inning of work.

Southpaw A.J. Puk was given the ninth inning for the first save opportunity this season against a trio of lefties.

He struck out Yankees catcher Austin Wells with a 98 mph heater and caught Trent Grisham looking before he allowed a solo shot to Ben Rice. Puk recorded the final out to pick up Arizona’s first save.

The D-backs’ bullpen was overall great, as Jalen Beeks and Shelby Miller combined for 2.2 perfect innings.
