Eugenio Suarez hits 1 of the farthest home runs by a Diamondback in Statcast era

PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez hit a ball not only onto the concourse in center field but off the wall on the other side of the walkway on Sunday.

Suarez worked ahead 2-0 in the first inning against Washington Nationals left-hander Mitchell Parker and swung through a splitter in the zone. Parker threw the exact same pitch, and Suarez crushed it a projected 466 feet to the left of the batter’s eye.

That’s the farthest hit ball by a Diamondbacks player since Christian Walker blasted a 467-foot shot in April 2022 against Tylor Megill of the New York Mets.

In the Statcast era (since 2015), there have been only seven home runs hit by Diamondbacks that traveled a projected 466 feet or beyond. Walker has two of them, as does Paul Goldschmidt. Ketel Marte and Jake Lamb each have one, and Suarez joins the list.

With the humidor, balls at Chase Field don’t travel quite as far as the mammoth shots of the franchise’s early days. It will be quite tough for someone to hit a 500-footer like Adam Dunn or Richie Sexson.

Suarez’s blast was also the fifth-longest home run hit in Major League Baseball this season. Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels is on top of the list at 484 feet.

Sunday’s home run gave the D-backs a 3-0 lead early. It was Suarez’s 16th home run of the season, which tied Corbin Carroll for the team lead and for fifth in MLB.

He’s hit 13 home runs this year 400 feet or further, which leads the league, per Statcast.
